Taking Digital Xpress' print workflow to the next level
When Digital Xpress needed a new print MIS that integrates with Quickbooks, they turned to ePS Tharstern.
"It quickly became evident that Tharstern would take our workflow to the next level."

About the company
Jack McGrath founded Digital XPress in 1989 as a printing brokerage—he didn’t own a single piece of equipment. That’s what the “X” originally stood for: no presses! As the business grew, and the years passed, Jack began acquiring equipment and adding staff. While nearly all of that early equipment is long gone, many of the people remain.
Today, with Jack’s daughter Jodi Hess at the helm, DXP has become one of the region’s most diverse print and mail companies. Their unique blend of equipment and talent enables them to do a lot under one roof: printing, mailing, creative and large format display graphics.
The challenge
Jodi Hess, President of Digital Xpress, was looking for a new MIS, as their previous MIS didn’t integrate well with Quickbooks.
“We were at a point where the system would not recognize any new general ledger codes. After almost a year of working with both companies on a solution that never came, we had to start looking elsewhere.”
Key requirements
The solution
Digital Xpress had used 3 different MIS systems and after seeing a demo of the Tharstern system, Hess was particularly impressed with the user-friendly estimator, shop floor data capabilities, inventory system and the robust Quickbooks integration.
With it being a long process, changing an MIS system can mean it’s difficult to get buy in from employees, but after Hess showed the rest of the team the Tharstern system, they were excited to get started and take their workflow to the next level.
The result
“The implementation process was thoughtful, organized, and well-executed. The Tharstern team are extremely knowledgeable and helped guide us through what the system could do and what options we had to set the system up in a way best suited for our equipment and structure. As with any system, to do it right it takes a long time but is 100% worth it.” Jodi Hess.
Previously, job estimates had to be done a few times to work out the best way to run them, but Tharstern does the comparison for them so there’s no additional, time-consuming work to do. Tharstern has also improved Digital Xpress’s operations by allowing any user to view the milestones and last operation for the job, and invoicing has been streamlined so less time is needed.
Next steps for Digital Xpress with the Tharstern system are to implement the inventory management and integrate with Infigo as their web-to-print solution.
“Our Customer Partnership Manager, Solutions Specialist, Project Co-ordinator and Implementation Specialist have all been wonderful to work with. They are knowledgeable, attentive, and a general pleasure to work with. We have worked with several teams in the past to implement new MIS software, and Tharstern, by far, has the best team out there.”
